Sahitya Chintan (साहित्य चिंतन) means "reflection on literature." The site is written for readers who want to find their way into Hindi and Marathi books: heritage speakers who grew up hearing the languages but never read them, students, translators, and anyone who has met Premchand or Tukaram in English and wants more.
We do three things. The picker on the homepage suggests three classics from a short, hand-picked list. The guides explain the literatures, the major authors and the practical questions, such as what public domain means in India. And for every book we recommend, we say what kind of place you can read it legally.
What we do not do
We host no books, no book files and no book text beyond the occasional short quotation from a public-domain work. We do not sell books, and we do not use affiliate links. We have deliberately not made pages for individual copyrighted titles, because a page that looks like a download page for a living author's book does them no favors.
How we judge public-domain status
Our public-domain notes follow the life-plus-60-years rule in India's Copyright Act, 1957, counting from the start of the year after the author's death. We only call a work public domain when the author's death date is well established and the rule clearly applies. Where a translator or editor is involved, we say so, because their work has its own copyright. Where we are not sure, we say "check." None of this is legal advice; the public domain guide explains the reasoning.
Who writes it
The site is written and maintained by the Sahitya Chintan Editors, a small team of readers of Hindi, Marathi and English. We check dates and claims against standard reference works and the sources themselves, and we revise pages when we find a mistake. If you spot one, please write to us.
The 2026 relaunch
Sahitya Chintan was relaunched in 2026 under new, independent management. This website is not affiliated with the earlier e-book library that used this domain, or with any previous owner of the domain, and it does not host or distribute any of that library's files. Old book and download addresses either point to our reading list and guides or no longer exist.
